Outlaw Trail Photos, Day 5, 50 Miles

265 Miles - 5 Days, September 20-24 1999

The start on Day 5

Bruce. What a fashion statement :) (we all wear ski gloves with shorts, right?) hehe

Sorry to say that again, the settings on my camera got changed around from being taken in and out of my saddle bag so things aren't in focus as well as I'd like :( (does that mean I can go back and try again?)
Controlled start

We began at 7 a.m., when there was already light.

Sandy & Weaver

The water is flowing on the right.

Sunrise

This was awesome!

This large tree had fallen over

So many interesting things on this trail

We wind and turn our way thru these canyons
A group of riders

We can stop anywhere to let the horses drink.

The sun continues to rise and highlight the rocks

Vet Check

These two horses spent most of the time eating and rubbing on one another.

Weaver looking for Sandy

Where's my new best friend?

No problem getting these two to eat!

Weaver, of course always comes home from a ride fat but this time I was exceptionally pleased that Rocky did all 5 days and even at a trot there are no signs of ribs....he's nice and plump :).

Sandy and Weaver

They got along great!

Here come two more riders into the vet check

Bruce and Linda. They finished just before the cutoff because they stayed out to help Andy, the runner.

A view of the trail

This trail is going between sand and slick rock.

Jeff leading down the slickrock

it's steeper than it looks.

Sandy and Weaver (again)

She just rode him down thru the slickrock.

More of the slickrock

You need to ride straight down it, not sideways at an angle, or else your horse will slip.

Sand...it was fairly deep in spots

We took our time thru this. I would think that it must be very difficult on the horses going from hard solid rock into deep sand repeatedly. Horses that made it thru this ride are truly exceptional athletes.

Jeff again

More sand, and some level trail

Notice the clouds that are forming.

Another view of the scenery

The clouds get more and more menacing

Notice the flowers in the foreground

A shot of the rock formations....

....and yet another view

We're heading down again, towards the river

We got off and led down this

It (is always) steeper than it looks!

A view of the canyon

We rode in the canyon for quite a ways, thru the water.

Looking back at the way we just came

Yes, we really did just come down this!

Sandy and Weaver

At least I got them moving!

So many interesting things to see.
