More Porta-Grazer Photos

How I carry the hay out to the grazersfor refilling (or I use a cart).

I took some more photos showing how I fill the Porta Grazers with hay. The horses are sure getting along well with these – Bo especially loves playing with his. I now carry the hay out in a carry-net or put it in the wheelbarrow rather than keep dragging the feeders back — the horses’s can eat out

Horse Feed – Elk Grove Milling Stable Mix

EGM Pellets – 250# barrel

This post will be most useful to those in my geographical area – California and Nevada more specifically.   I just this year discovered Elk Grove Milling stable mix pellets, and started feeding them to my horses prior to the XP ride.  My horses both absolutely LOVE the stuff!

It’s not often that you discover something new that works so well especially where feed is concerned.  I only wish

Product Review: Porta Grazers!

I love when a new product does these three things:  1)  makes my life easier; 2)  provides a better way to manage my horses and 3) saves money.

The Porta Grazer does all of those things!  We used the porta grazers for a few weeks ahead of going on the XP this summer to get the horse’s used to them.

They work great at home and are really awesome to have when traveling with

Another beet pulp rinsing solution

Thought I’d try to make a way to rinse beet pulp that works well for traveling on the road with my horses.  I’ve been using mesh baskets for that for some time, and they work quite well.  I can use them to scoop beet pulp out of a larger bucket, or pour the beet pulp through them and strain out the additional water.

I always rinse my beet pulp to remove extra sugars.  This

More useful items for those long trips with horses in tow!

Here are a few more useful things. The first thing is just inside the trailer LQ door – levels to tell me if I am level when I park.  If I am not level enough, sometimes the fridge doesn’t want to work.  I have two mounted so that I can see if I am level both side to side and front to back.  These can be placed outside for even easier viewing too.  I

More useful things, for endurance riders & horse owners!

Here are a few more items that are useful to have, either around the barn at home or to take along when traveling with horses.  The first thing is the 80# size Vittles Vault feed storage containers.  These things are great!  I am able to store two bags of horse feed in each container.  Even tho the size says 80#, I often put in two 50# bags of feed in them.

You can order

My Longevity List

When I shared my endurance horse longevity post on FB, a friend asked this question:  “Karen you obviously have WONDERFUL horses – but what thing or few things have you learned thru the years that have helped your amazing record? I bet I know most of them but would love to hear from you what you think are the top 5 most important things you think you have learned to help longevity of your

Death Valley Ride Report 2010

Day 4 of DVE. Karen and Granite Chief. Photo by Steve Bradley.

Getting to and setting up camp.

We stayed longer at Jackie’s helping Annie get stuff together.  We drove stuff over to camp and set up some water and dropped the portable toilets and horse trailer (for crewbags/pulled horses) off.

While on those trips Annie had to pull a couple of rigs out of being ‘stuck’.  It wasn’t that it

Winter hoof care at 5000′

It’s interesting keeping barefoot horses this time of year at my place.  The footing can change completely in a matter of hours from being really nice, to being muddy, to being snow and then to an ice rink….tho most often it is somewhat of a combination of all of those things.

Which can make it really difficult on bare hooves.  I remember years ago, okay maybe it was decades already….and pulling shoes on my

Whoops – forgot something!

Ever have that happen?  You know, when you realize that you forgot to do something, and now…it’s too late?

I got down to the Death Valley Warmup ride and was preparing to pack my crewbag on Friday for the out lunch check for Chief on Saturday.

No big deal, right?  Ha!  I wish!

I have gotten to where I am really pretty good about cleaning stuff up before heading home from each ride.
