More phone apps

These are not necessarily useful only for endurance riders, but for anybody using a Droid phone.  I found that some apps were battery hogs and have done away with those.  I have also learned that if I am at a ride and there is no cell service that I can put the phone in airplane mode, which turns off the phone’s ability to try and access a signal.  This will keep the battery working

Useful Android Phone Apps for Trail and Endurance Riders

It seems like a lot of riders these days have smart phones.  I resisted for a long time, but then when my phone started to die on the XP this summer I ended up getting a new Android phone while we were in Wyoming.  By that point I had already seen how useful they could be from other riders.  I’ve added a lot of apps to the phone that are fun, but there are

What GPS should I use? Part 1

I get asked that question a lot.  I’ve been using GPS’s for more than a decade now and have used several different models.  I’ve written articles about using GPS’s for various publications.  For starters on this topic, I’m going to copy and paste a previous article that I wrote about using a GPS.  Keep in mind that this is now several years old.  However, the basics still apply and are useful to know.

Moving average versus total time and figuring out how to ride the Tevis!

My actual “moving” average speed on the Tevis was 6.07 mph.  During the 24 hours of the Tevis Cup there were 2 one-hour holds (vet checks), and eight vet checks total.  The majority of the vet checks do not have hold times so you have to ride so that you have time to allow for the time spent in those checks.

My ride numbers:  5:15 start, 3:33 finish.  That left me with 1:42 time

I made some new headers; website updates for Sunrise Ranch; kitchen remodel getting closer too!

Been getting a lot done this week though not as much as I would have liked.  I did a bunch of updates on the sunriseranchrides.com website.  From looking at it you probably won’t notice.  Where it’s going to be noticed is on the back end when we receive the ride entries they are now going to come in formatted exactly how they need to be to reduce the amount of work that

What are the best headlamps?

Anybody here have any recommendations?  I still have my old original blue Petzel headlamp that is probably a dozen years old, or more.  It has 5 LD lights on it that can flash or be solid.  It is “okay” for doing barn chores in the winter, but is just not very bright.  I use it every evening this time of year.   It is not really that great for use on a 100. It is

Blog Updates

I just updated my blog to the newest WordPress version – 2.9.  It went really smoothly and everything seems to be working in the dashboard.  If somebody spots something that doesn’t work in a previous blog post, let me know.  I see that the links in my right hand column are gone.  I’ll work on fixing that.  A widget probably needs to be updated to work with 2.9.

I really like using WP because

Cool ringtones, and they really are free!

I love having custom ringtones on my cell phone. It’s really kind of cool to have a special ringtone for different people so that you can immediately identify who is calling. There are so many places to get ringtones, either free or by purchasing them. It’s also easy to make them yourself, which is what my husband does.

Bongotones (http://www.bongotones.com) is a great site that will give you free ringtones. There are a couple

Tevis is fast approaching, just a few more days!

I thought I would share some great gems of info from the Tevis website.

First of all, who do you think said the quote in the heading of this blog post?

I’m sure some of you got it right – it was none other than Julie Suhr.  She wrote this great article called “You, Your Horse and Lady Luck“. If you haven’t already, go read it!

If you’d like to read more from Julie, check out her book “Ten Feet Tall, Still”.  You can get it from AERC, or order direct from Julie. Every book sold directly puts $25 into saving our trails!

As of today (7/27/2009) there are 172 riders entered in the ride.  The entry list is posted on the website here.

To keep up to date with updates such as these and others between now and on ride day, check out the Tevis News Twitter feed.  You can get to it directly, or view it at the bottom of the webcast pages.  I’ll post the feed below this paragraph so you can get an idea of what it looks like. (sorry if it adds a bunch of blank space)

Next is an article by Erin Klentos on Trail Etiquette and Safety.  Click on the link or click below to read more.

Battery conditioning & Guess which ride this photo is from?

One of my favorite rides – can anybody guess which one?

First of all – can anybody guess where this picture was taken?  It’s one of my favorite rides.  This trail can scare some people if they are afraid of heights.  It’s very scenic though, and a lot of fun.

Onto the next topic – battery conditioning, which isn’t as much fun as conditioning our horses…lol…but it’s something that we should all be
