Endurance Horses & Joint Products

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have found it quite interesting that those turning in their Decade Team interviews recently have nearly all answered this question:  Do you give any kind of joint products?  with a yes, and then followed by a description.  Many are using a feed through product with a large number using Adequan IM.  I also answered yes and covered what I use on Chief in our

Minor horse trailer repairs

My trailer is now 9 years old, and there are always things that need to be done to it.  Like here, I am putting some new fender trim on the fender.

I really don’t know how long the fenders have been sans trim.  It’s been awhile, probably years.  I honestly can’t remember when the trim came off.  My husband says why fix it, when the horses’s haven’t hurt themselves on it the way it

More Porta-Grazer Photos

How I carry the hay out to the grazersfor refilling (or I use a cart).

I took some more photos showing how I fill the Porta Grazers with hay. The horses are sure getting along well with these – Bo especially loves playing with his. I now carry the hay out in a carry-net or put it in the wheelbarrow rather than keep dragging the feeders back — the horses’s can eat out

Horse Feed – Elk Grove Milling Stable Mix

EGM Pellets – 250# barrel

This post will be most useful to those in my geographical area – California and Nevada more specifically.   I just this year discovered Elk Grove Milling stable mix pellets, and started feeding them to my horses prior to the XP ride.  My horses both absolutely LOVE the stuff!

It’s not often that you discover something new that works so well especially where feed is concerned.  I only wish

Product Review: Porta Grazers!

I love when a new product does these three things:  1)  makes my life easier; 2)  provides a better way to manage my horses and 3) saves money.

The Porta Grazer does all of those things!  We used the porta grazers for a few weeks ahead of going on the XP this summer to get the horse’s used to them.

They work great at home and are really awesome to have when traveling with

Product Reviews: Hoof boots – Renegades!!

Day 40, 2011 XP – Bucklands to Virginia City.

Where do I start?  This photo was taken on the final day of the 40 day, 2040 mile 2011 XP ride.  Chief had just finished an 18 mile leg and was about to be loaded into the trailer to be hauled to a drop-off point to finish the remaining 30+ miles of the ride.

Wearing Renegade Hoof Boots the entire way, of course!

Useful Product Reviews: Insulated water bottles and Propel

I found the best insulated water bottles earlier this year from Sierra Trading Post.  My only regret is that I only picked up two of them!  I used them every day on the XP and loved them.

STP no longer has them, but you can get them from Amazon at this link.   They are BPA free and also dishwasher and freezer safe.

They are 24 oz. in size, so having two bottles along was

Useful Product Reviews: Reducing bug bites on my horses!

I’m going to show a few items in this post that were beneficial to have along on the XP this summer.  Just ask Bo – he’s a bug magnet and these products were soooo helpful for him!  Chief was also happy to have them.

The first thing that we used the most of, were the Kensington Bug Suits.  They worked great and were used quite often!  Both horses had a full suit –

Useful Product Reviews: Horse Collars and custom length tie-ropes

One of the things I’d like to do is go over some of the useful products that I used this summer.  I definitely put many different items to the test.  I was very fortunate to have some great sponsors that supplied me with some of the best products in the industry!

I also used many other items that I had already had, or purchased just for the big ride.  Some things were life-savers and

What I did this summer (so far)

I haven’t had time to devote much time to this blog.  I had a great time on the 2011 XP this summer.

I wrote a journal during the trip, which is here (from that link, click on my name – Karen Chaton).

I had the most amazing trip riding Granite Chief and Pro Bono 2040 miles on the Pony Express trail, from St. Joseph, MO to Virginia City, NV.

It was some adventure.  We
