Barefoot endurance horse hoof photos: November 2010 – Pro Bono

These photos of Bo’s hooves were taken 11/4/2010.  His feet have turned out to be quite nice.  I think that they even look a bit “prettier” than Chief’s hooves do.  Even though my horse’s feet aren’t perfect….they get the job done!

The interesting thing is that in the last three or four months I have had to do very little as far as trimming on Bo’s hooves.  It was as if his feet reached

Barefoot endurance horse hoof photos: November 2010 – Granite Chief

I took photos of both horse’s hooves today. In this first post I’m going to show some of the photos of Chief’s hooves.  I’ll also explain a bit about them and point out some of the things that I’d like to improve on.  After that, I’ll do a second post with photos of Bo’s hooves.

I hope that by sharing photos of my horse’s hooves that it will give somebody new to keeping a

Renegades sweep AERC National Championships!

Isn’t this great for Renegade hoof boots?  I wanted to share some good news!  Made in the good ‘ol USA too!  I’m copying this good news (see below) from the Renegade hoof boot website, with permission.  I found it really interesting that the 55 mile race was won so fast (3:29) and that riders 7 through 11 were pulled at the finish line.  Ouch!

Renegade glue-ons come in eight colors – you can read

Hoof Boot Maintenance

If you ride in any kind of hoof boot you already know that they require a certain amount of work to maintain them.

That amount of work depends on the type of boot and how often you ride in it and how hard or easy your horse is on your boots.

It’s no different than any other type of tack or riding equipment that you use.  If you take care of your hoof boots,

Product Reviews: Zephyr’s Garden Thrush Spray

So far this  ride season, I’ve glued Renegade glue-on boots on Chief twice.  The first time he completed three endurance rides in the glue-ons, and the second time he completed four endurance rides in the glue-ons.  I know you are probably wondering what does that have to do with thrush spray?

Well…a lot!  One of the reasons why I am not a big fan of gluing boots on is because I don’t like having

Feed for great feet: Low starch, low NSC horse feeds

I’m going to share a few things that I learned about horse feed in this blog post.  Then I will do another one showing a bit more about what I learned about actually managing the horses hoof itself, when the horse is hoof sensitive.

New Low Starch and Low NSC feeds are becoming readily available at feed stores.   Almost all of the major brands now have something.  This is great news and will allow

Pro Bono hoof photos, May 15, 2010

Here are some current photos of Bo’s hooves.   These were taken over the weekend while I was at the Hell’s Kitchen Canyon ride.  Bo has been doing very well barefoot.  I’ve ridden Bo barefoot on quite a few rides in the last few months.  I’ve found that it’s been really super easy to pull his Renegades off and then put them on when the terrain changes.  Together, Bo and I have been gaining our

Glucose Kinetics in Horses (more specifically – endurance arabians)

This is a great read and useful information for those of us competing in endurance…or for just about anybody that is managing a barefoot horse or two.

Dietary Energy Source Affects Glucose Kinetics in Trained Arabian Geldings at Rest and during Endurance Exercise<

You’re horses are what they eat!

I learned a long time ago how what I fed my horse affected his hoof sensitivity.  It also affects a lot of other things.  I

Barefoot hoof care: overlaid bars

A while back, Cindy asked about overlaid bars. To be honest, I haven’t really given the bars that much thought. Most of the time the horses self-wear the excess down. When they don’t then it’s just a small amount of work to smooth them out.  Now that I’ve done more research on it, I can see that it is important to know when you have overlaid bars and what to do to correct

Bar H Renegade Boot Update

Chief at Bar H. Photo by Lynne Glazer.

I rode Chief both days at Bar H (100 miles) plus marking trail in a new pair of strap on Renegades with built in gel pads. I thought I would do a quick update so others can learn about them.

We had a great ride all three days (1=trail marking, 2=50 mile rides) and I was happy with how Chief felt over the rocks and
