Bar H ride coming up

I think the horses like their new haircuts! It has been nice enough to take their blankets off during the day.
Tomorrow we are heading to Perris, CA for the Bar H ride where the horses will get to enjoy sunny and 70′ish degree weather.
It looks like there will be a good turnout for the [...]

Hoof Tougheners and Thrush Prevention

I try not to post too often on ridecamp.  I think I’ve probably exceeded my allotment for the week, so will answer the question about what I use to toughen feet and treat thrush here in my blog.  I’ve covered this stuff before, sometimes the posts get buried because they are a year or more [...]

So what exactly is that icky smelly stuff called Ichthamol really good for?

Lots of horse people have a tub of ichthamol in their tack room somewhere.  I know I do!  I recently used the stuff which got me curious about what the other uses are for it.  Ichthamol isn’t something that I have used very often.
Ichthammol is a black, tarry substance that is extracted from rock schist [...]

Organic Selenium & Horse Guard Vitamins – Save 15%!!

Read all the way to the bottom to get the discount code!
In the past I posted about what I feed my competing endurance horses, including Mega Dose vitamins (more on that here, too).  I’ve been really happy with these vitamins and especially like that everything my horses need in a vitamin is included in the [...]

Death Valley Ride Photos & Ride Report

Here are some photos from the Death Valley ride.  We had a nice time.  My husband Dave went with me to move the rig.  We did have a funny noise coming from the truck when we slowed down going into Bishop….crud!  Turns out it was the truck brakes and it’s getting fixed as we speak.
I [...]

More bare hoof photos: Pro Bono, December 17, 2009

These were taken today.  Some are before, and some are after a bit of a touch-up trim.  He hasn’t needed much due to being ridden barefoot, and also from doing those two endurance rides barefoot in November.  Keep in mind when looking at these photos that there is a lot of pigment in Bo’s hooves [...]

Granite Chief’s Hooves 12/16/2009

I just took these today.  There are photos of all four of Chief’s feet from the outside and bottoms, plus I took at least one of each hoof showing the rasp being held to the hoofwall to look for flares. I also showed the angle gauge.  I’ve been seeing some improvement but there are still [...]

Barefoot transitioning: Hoof Boot Q & A

Now that more and more people are reading my blog, I get a lot of feedback and requests from people about topics that they would like to see covered.  I’m definitely not running short on ideas anytime soon, which is great!
At any given time I’ve got at least a dozen or more posts in draft [...]

Git-R-Done Ride

We had a really nice ride both days at the GRD ride.  I rode Bo both days in the 50.
The weather was beautiful, the trail was well marked and there was plenty of water.  They had lots of volunteers and overall did a really great job on the ride.  The ride was small this year [...]

Well, it’s official – Cheefy’s got his 9k!

The AERC office got the results online today from the Grand Canyon ride – so now it’s official – Chief has his 9,000 miles!  Actually, he’s at 9,075.
It’s kind of hard to believe.  I dunno – like maybe it’s not real?  Where did the time go?  Just how did we rack up that many miles [...]

Healthy hooves from the inside out

I’m going to share more info here on vaccinations and how their over use can contribute to an unhealthy horse.  You can’t expect to have healthy hooves if your horses immune system is shot or if your horse is otherwise stressed.
There are so many things to consider when keeping our horses barefoot that it can’t [...]

Rinsing beet pulp and hoof trimming tools

I took a few photos of my trimming tools. The first one is my hoofjack, rasp, measuring tools – for toe length and hoof angle, and hoof pick.
I know, I’m probably a little bit in over-kill mode when it comes to my horses feet.  I always measure to make sure everything is where it [...]

Update on the horses and a chainsaw massacre (sort of….)

Okay where do I start?  I’ve had a busy and exciting couple of days with lots of good news.  First and most importantly – BO PASSED HIS VET EXAM!!  Whew.  Major sigh of relief!  Actually, I was pretty confident that he would and I think he would have passed it about two weeks before [...]

The myths and realities of barefoot hooves

Rather than writing this all out myself, I’m going to share a bit here from Kim Cassidy’s website.  She wrote a piece called: Barefoot: The Myth and the Reality.  There are some good bits of information in there.  I think that this journey we are all taking with our horses has many routes and paths.  [...]

Bare hoof photos of Granite Chief – July 2009

By the time I get back to the barn each evening after riding, it’s getting dark.  So I haven’t been able to get any good shots of Chief’s hooves.  I just finally got around to taking some.  His feet had gotten really flat because he grew a ton of sole on the bottom.  Actually, saying [...]
