A Change of Footing plus Upcoming Product Reviews!

It was past time to do something with the horse paddock area.

Over the last several years it had worn away and had low spots.

Last winter was the final draw!  It was so wet last year that the entire area was one big mud pit for months…and months.

The first photo shows some of the piles of material that were brought in.  We brought in something like 25 tons of decomposed granite (base)

Riding in the rain: The 1st day of the Grand Canyon XP – what went right and what didn’t!

Day 1, Grand Canyon North Rim. Photo by Steve Bradley.

The fall colors this year at the Grand Canyon XP were stunning!  I went down early to help out.  Dave Rabe did also.  No sooner had we gotten camp set up and situated then we hopped into the jeep with Dave and Ann and went out to saw logs and clear some trail.

That went well and after several logs were sawed and

Tevis 2010: A quick recap!

I just recently received this photo, taken by Mindy’s daughter Jennifer Wolfe.

This is Bo and I leaving Foresthill on the 2010 Tevis.  As you can see, we were having a great time.  It was a really magical ride for us.  Time has gotten away from me and I never did write very much about our Tevis ride!

The best part of the ride this year was the feeling of security that I had

Renegades sweep AERC National Championships!

Isn’t this great for Renegade hoof boots?  I wanted to share some good news!  Made in the good ‘ol USA too!  I’m copying this good news (see below) from the Renegade hoof boot website, with permission.  I found it really interesting that the 55 mile race was won so fast (3:29) and that riders 7 through 11 were pulled at the finish line.  Ouch!

Renegade glue-ons come in eight colors – you can read

Hoof Boot Maintenance

If you ride in any kind of hoof boot you already know that they require a certain amount of work to maintain them.

That amount of work depends on the type of boot and how often you ride in it and how hard or easy your horse is on your boots.

It’s no different than any other type of tack or riding equipment that you use.  If you take care of your hoof boots,

2010 Eastern High Sierra Classic 50 Ride Photos & Report – My 500th Ride Completion!

This year was the 25th anniversary of one of the most popular rides in the West region.  This ride is very popular for good reason too – it’s in incredibly beautiful country (the Sierra’s) plus it’s got a lot of fun technical trails.  The 50 mile ride consists of two loops.  The first one is slightly over 20 miles and has the technical terrain on it that includes a lot of boulders, narrow singletrack

Endurance horses are going the distance without nailed on shoes!

Check this out, 7 of the top 10 horses in the AERC National Mileage Championship are competing in hoof boots and are NOT using nailed on shoes for hoof protection!

My two horses are both in the standings – Chief is 4th with 970 miles and Bo is 7th with 750 miles- though Bo now has another 100 miles to his credit.  Bo has done a lot of miles totally barefoot as well, and

Pre-ride check, before cleaning everything for….Tevis on Saturday!

I took Bo out for a ride yesterday evening to do a final check on our tack and hoof boots.  The first photo is of Bo just before we left to head out for the trail.

I think everything is good to go – after our ride I put most of the tack in the dishwasher so it will be clean for the ride on Saturday.

While I am going to glue Renegades on

Tevis is approaching fast!

Next Saturday, July 24 – is the 54th annual running of the 100 mile Tevis Cup endurance ride.  I’ve been riding, volunteering or crewing since ’94.  It is the kind of event that gets in your blood.  Even if you can’t ride the Tevis, you feel compelled to help others ride and complete or else want to contribute in some way.

I think that as soon a horse person (that really loves to ride)

Strawberry Fields Forever 2010 Ride Photos!

Photo by Vicki Gaebe. Karen & Chief, Day 2 Strawberry Fields Forever

It took me awhile to get these posted, because I had to go through a lot of photos.

I have narrowed them down to only 265 in the album.  There are a lot of photos here – from all four days of the ride plus trail marking and trail work.

Rider photos were taken by Vicki Gaebe, and can be
