When I shared my endurance horse longevity post on FB, a friend asked this question: “Karen you obviously have WONDERFUL horses – but what thing or few things have you learned thru the years that have helped your amazing record? I bet I know most of them but would love to hear from you what you think are the top 5 most important things you think you have learned to help longevity of your

I wrote this in early 2001, printed it out and put it in my binder for the ’01 XP ride and I don’t think I’ve seen this since then, till last night. My grandmother is now gone, so reading that part was really hard. Her father (my great grandfather) rode a horse from Oklahoma City to New York and back twice, and from Oklahoma City to San Francisco, CA. Grandma’s family

My blog has been having some problems due in part to the hosting provider. They have also made some suggestions which I have implemented. I’ll see if there is something else I can do to speed things up and get things to load faster.
In the right hand column I recently added some page stats.
Google Analytics shows how many unique visitors I’ve had in the lastmonth.
Just below that, you’ll see a number

Death Valley Encounter, 2010 Ride Season. Photo by Lynne Glazer.
Holy moly – it’s already time again to plan for the upcoming ride season – which, coincidentally started on December 1. I am really looking forward to this ride season because I believe it will be one of the more historical ones.
My first ride of the season is this coming weekend at the Death Valley Warmup Ride. I hope to ride both

The weather cleared up by morning and we were able to tack up without getting wet. It had rained a couple of times lightly during the night. I set the alarm a half an hour earlier than usual because I thought that I might be moving realllly slowly based on how I felt after the second day (did I mention how it felt like I’d been run over by a bus?).
Just as I’m

Weather report for the second day of the ride: it WAS going to rain on us. It was warmer, 40 degrees versus the previous mornings’ 28. I already had my goretex rain pants tied on the back of my saddle along with Chief’s rump rug. I wore my usual long sleeve riding shirt, a fleece jacket and a waterproof shell with a hood, and my regular riding tights.
The night before I brought Chief’s

We spent some time the evening that we arrived at the ride hanging out at the campfire talking with Scott Sansom, Ken Cook, and other ride volunteers. We learned just how much work is involved in putting on the Desert Gold ride. It’s HUGE!!
The ride takes place on public lands in Fort Ord, near the Monterey Bay in CA. Since there are other trail users the endurance ride has to be extremely careful

Desert Gold day 2 completion award photo. Chief was one of six horses to complete all three days.
As with many rides this time of year, getting to and from the ride is as much or more of an adventure than the ride itself. This time was no exception. I hadn’t really been planning on going to Desert Gold though I always like going to rides that I haven’t done before. What

Here I am on Tulip, riding next to Nannette and Sensational Flame. Photo by Steve Bradley.
I think that I am pretty fortunate to be offered the opportunity to ride Tulip on the second day. For those that don’t know, Tulip is a Morab endurance horse that holds the record for having the most endurance miles on the sport.
With this ride, Tulip has 21,630 miles. Here is a link to his AERC

I’m still not entirely sure I believe that it actually happened! I just checked what I had written at the start of the 2010 ride season. These were my goals:
I would like to do at least one 1-day 100 this year. I’d also like for Bo to reach 2,000 miles. I’d like to reach both 25k and 26k mile in 2010. I’d like for Chief to achieve 10,000 miles.
So how have things
