Last ride of the season: Desert Gold

Desert Gold day 2 completion award photo. Chief was one of six horses to complete all three days.

As with many rides this time of year, getting to and from the ride is as much or more of an adventure than the ride itself.  This time was no exception.  I hadn’t really been planning on going to Desert Gold though I always like going to rides that I haven’t done before.  What

A Change of Footing plus Upcoming Product Reviews!

It was past time to do something with the horse paddock area.

Over the last several years it had worn away and had low spots.

Last winter was the final draw!  It was so wet last year that the entire area was one big mud pit for months…and months.

The first photo shows some of the piles of material that were brought in.  We brought in something like 25 tons of decomposed granite (base)

Deciding which headgear to use on a horse when I ride

In the first photo (by Steve Bradley) I have a S-hack on Chief.  This photo actually ended up on the current issue of Trail Blazer!

In the other photo (riding from home) I have a Myler Kimberwicke on Chief.  In both photos Chief is relaxed and on a loose rein.  You can’t really compare a lot other than that since in the first photo we are going down a fairly steep hill.

So how

Product Reviews: Zephyr’s Garden Fly Spray

One of the benefits of taking so long to do a review on something is that it gives me a longer time to try it out!

I’ve been using Zephyr’s Garden fly spray for a few months now.  The first time I had a chance to really put it to the test was at Robie Park the day before the Tevis ride in July.  The small no-see-um nat type bugs were driving Bo nuts!

Barefoot endurance horse hoof photos: November 2010 – Pro Bono

These photos of Bo’s hooves were taken 11/4/2010.  His feet have turned out to be quite nice.  I think that they even look a bit “prettier” than Chief’s hooves do.  Even though my horse’s feet aren’t perfect….they get the job done!

The interesting thing is that in the last three or four months I have had to do very little as far as trimming on Bo’s hooves.  It was as if his feet reached

Barefoot endurance horse hoof photos: November 2010 – Granite Chief

I took photos of both horse’s hooves today. In this first post I’m going to show some of the photos of Chief’s hooves.  I’ll also explain a bit about them and point out some of the things that I’d like to improve on.  After that, I’ll do a second post with photos of Bo’s hooves.

I hope that by sharing photos of my horse’s hooves that it will give somebody new to keeping a
