Next Saturday, July 24 – is the 54th annual running of the 100 mile Tevis Cup endurance ride. I’ve been riding, volunteering or crewing since ’94. It is the kind of event that gets in your blood. Even if you can’t ride the Tevis, you feel compelled to help others ride and complete or else want to contribute in some way.
I think that as soon a horse person (that really loves to ride)

Unspeakable beauty and unimaginable bedlam can be found together in the Trifid Nebula. Also known as M20, this photogenic nebula is visible with good binoculars towards the constellation of Sagittarius. The energetic processes of star formation create not only the colors but the chaos. The red-glowing gas results from high-energy starlight striking interstellar hydrogen gas. The dark dust filaments that lace M20 were created in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and in the

We had a nice ride this weekend, going from the Overlook (finish) of Tevis down to the Poverty Bar river crossing and back. It was a 24 mile round trip day and took us around five hours. We spent a lot of time down at the river cooling ourselves, and the horses. It was fun for me getting to see this section of trail in the daylight.

The first two pads that I am currently testing to see how hot they get on the horses backs are a Toklat Woolback pad with inserts and a Reno Star Alpaca pad.
I have heat tested several saddle pads over the years. Using a pad that remains cooler reduces the heat load on my horse and also helps to improve his recovery times.
If I pull my saddle off on a hot ride and

Can you tell this is a spoiled horse? I mean really – look at how many bags of hay and buckets of water and feed he has? This is for just one horse!
I put out plenty of water so that way I’d have it available for sponging during the vet checks, and also for washing my tack (I call it doing “horse laundry” items).
When I have only one horse I can keep

It has suddenly gotten hotter. It should get up to 90 degrees here today and will get even warmer than that in the next few days. I know in previous years when I have ridden my horses more in the heat, they acclimate to it rather well and have done well on rides that were very hot or else hot and humid.
When my horses

My GPS tracks from the Washooo 50
The ride went really well yesterday. I decided to take Bo. He’d been feeling a bit left out when I ended up riding Chief all 4 days of the Strawberry Fields ride. Granted, Bo did get to mark trail and has been getting in a lot of additional riding — he is the kind of horse that gets bored easily. So this ride has his name

Heading over to Washoe State Park for the Washoo 50 tomorrow. I’m taking Bo! I am looking forward to trying the new alpaca saddle pad that I got. It’s beautiful. I can’t wait to see if it stays as cool on the horse as the Toklat Woolback pads do.
Enjoy this video – it’s from VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945.

This photo reminds me of a sea shell, I love it~! I’ve got a bunch of new astro photos and have fallen behind with posting them.
Here is info on this one: M51, the ‘Whirlpool Galaxy’ in Canes Venatici is famous for its beautiful spiral structure, The M51 system is a spectacular example of interacting galaxies – in this case NGC 5195 is being “ripped apart” by the huge gravitational disturbance of M51,

Here are some of the things I’ve been using on rides recently, mainly as snacks or for an energy or electrolyte boost for myself. I find that if I do a pretty decent job taking care of myself, then I can do an even better job taking care of my horse.
It can be hard as a rider to keep up with everything. Especially if I am traveling a long distance to a ride
