2009 H1N1 Flu…aka the Swine Flu

dscf5420 medium 150x150 2009 H1N1 Flu...aka the Swine Flu

My ankle a week later, it's much better - a horse wasn't even involved!

Well, it looks like so far about six of us that went to the GRD ride have come down with it.  IT being the dang Swine Flu!

Here is more info from the CDC about the H1N1 virus.  It’s really going around.  I know a lot of people that have it now, or have already had it.

Here are the symptoms, for those interested:  The symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, including 2009 H1N1 and have respiratory symptoms without a fever. Severe illnesses and deaths have occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.

Guess now I have three good reasons to take it easy – my sprained ankle, which the doctor put into a brace yesterday, a swollen knee (which gets to go back to the dr. again later in November), and now the flu.

Once I’m feeling better I also have to go to rehab for the ankle.  I twisted it a couple of days before the GRD ride.  At the time it made a loud snap though I didn’t think I broke anything since I was still able to walk on it.  Heck, I was even able to go and ride two days and 100 miles on it, but by Sunday at the ride it was hurting and then on the drive home it puffed up like a blowfish.  The support brace plus medication and elevation have helped a lot with the swelling.

I guess if what they say about things happening in threes is true, then I’m all set, right?  ha ha…or rather…cough, cough!  Ouch….okay, back to getting some zzzzz’s.  The sooner I can get through this, the better.

  • here is what I wonder…the above symptoms sound like NORMAL flu symptoms…so how the heck do you know (and would we even care??) ja have the normal, vs the swine flu. If it is like normal, ten what is all the big fuss about H1N1…I mean really…SO many ppl already die from the normal flu, more than from H1N1 far as I can tell from reports, yet everyone is all OMG, SWINE flu… sure, if you are in an already compromised health issue (asthma, etc) or are old/young…getting it may be bad…but then the NORMAL flu is the same way in those situations! I think just getting it (like it seems you have) and getting over it is no big deal, long as you keep an eye on the fever or side effects like lung stuff (which, yet again, is the same ja do anyway if you get normal flu….). In fact, heard today on the radio, “normal” flu is a combo of both a bird and a swine flu variant…so normal flu has BOTH bird and pig, yet we now have had panics about SEPARATE pig and bird flus….hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I dunno…sounds like a bunch of bruhaha over not much…. (unless you are already unhealthy, or live in a poor country where you can’t get normal meds like fever reducers, etc…)

  • from the CDC: “The information analyzed by CDC supports the conclusion that 2009 H1N1 flu has caused greater disease burden in people younger than 25 years of age than older people.” and “While the disease seen in the current 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak has been mild for many people, it has been severe and even fatal for others.”

I don’t so far think this is any worse either, it’s just that it can be more serious to a larger population than the regular flu. Hopefully once we all get it, we’ll have immunity.

I’m in the high risk category (younger than 25) so I got vaccinated today for H1N1. It’s free through work, and I do a lot of travelling, including flying. To top it all off – I’m single and live by myself, hours from friends and family. I’m also the type to not go to the hospital and assume things will resolve themselves. Sounds like the type of person that could end up dead huh? :)

Take care and get well soon Karen!

    Dear Karen:

We riders are so sorry to read about your severly sprained ankle. The photograph was heart-rendering….and we can readily perceive your pain via the photograph. Please diligently follow the instructions of your orthopedic surgeon. Basically, you need to heal your ankle by resting with an elevated foot and not bearing any weight on it. (this happened to me several years ago)

Ask nearby friends in the Minden area to feed Granite Chief and Bo for a few days. With support from Bob, and all the AERC readers of your blog.
