First album of photos from Grand Canyon XP, 2009

Karen and Chief. Photo by Steve Bradley

I started my photo albums from the Grand Canyon ride with the middle day – because that’s the day Chief reached 9,000 lifetime miles .  It seems like I was just starting him.  My how time flies.  He has really been a nice horse for me.

It’s definitely something to celebrate when you have a horse as reliable and consistent as Chief has been.  Plus, he

New endurance horse research from Loomis Basin & WST (Tevis Cup)

I always find these kinds of research projects interesting.  I know they were doing more this year at the Tevis.  This one just came out in PubMed.  I thought it worth noting that horses that colicked had a lower PVC (which means they were more dehydrated) than horses with poor recovery.  The one time Chief felt colicky at a ride he came right in with a 60 or less HR and recovered even lower

Grand Canyon Wrapup: Good Karma

Karen and Chief on the Rim, Day 5. Photo by Steve Bradley

It’s always good to get back home after a long ride.  Yet, it’s also kind of sad that it’s over already.  It seems like the multidays just fly by sometimes and this one was no exception.  I always like riding at the Grand Canyon even in the years when the weather doesn’t cooperate.  This year we only had bad weather on

The trail of an endurance addict

Made it home from the Grand Canyon – hard to believe that I was riding on the rim just yesterday, and now I’m 670 miles away back at home!

The horses both traveled well and the truck ran good – we had a nice trip traveling with Dave Rabe and the Fredrickson’s most of the way back.  We stayed in Hurricane last night which was nice – 62 degrees (versus 24 where camp was).

Grand Canyon Day 5: It’s over already, wow!

Another great day. I ended up riding Bo one day – the fourth day, and Chief the other four days, days 1-2-3 and 5 for a total of 250 miles between them. The weather ended up cooperating very nicely for us. Steve Bradley got some great photos. I also have quite a few that I took while riding. I can’t believe how quickly the week went by! My propane ran out last night –

Grand Canyon Day 3: 9,000 Mile Horse!

Photo by Steve Bradley. Chief made 9k AERC miles today plus XP Gold Medal! Riding Bo tomorrow, I figure Chief deserves to get a day off and I really want to ride Bo. It’s a tossup though, because I sure love riding Cheefy…we had a great day today. Weather is beautiful! More later…..gotta get some sleep.

Grand Canyon XP: Day 2, How much better can it get?

The second went really well.  It was gorgeous!  We were blessed to be able to ride under beautiful blue skies and it warmed up nicely – what a great fall day to ride.

I rode Chief and we finished in the back 1/3 somewhere.  42 started and 38 finished with Howard Kent taking first and BC on J.K.

I have added some photos to Facebook, so be sure to check them out!  I was

Grand Canyon Day 1: The Snow Globe Day

Chief after finishing day 1, Grand Canyon XP 2009

I had a really nice ride today on Chief.  There were 41 riders, and I finished at 3:43 p.m.

Crockett finished first with a ride time of 5 1/2 hours.

The first photo is Chief after finishing, I let him eat hay at Dave’s trailer (parked next to mine) while I put a blanket on Okay (Dave’s horse), since it was just about to

Getting ready to ride – Grand Canyon XP

The Grand Canyon XP ride starts tomorrow.  I think I’m ready, or as ready as I’m going to be.  I rode Chief yesterday to get the edge off, and also to help mark another section of trail.  He is such a character, that horse – he definitely doesn’t need to be entered in an endurance ride or be on the trail with other horses to be as enthusiastic as ever about getting to go.
