We have our fingers crossed that the surgery Chief had on his eyelid today will be the final one, and that it will heal appropriately.
I took a photo of Chief grazing on the lawn while we waited for the vet to show up. The lawn grass and pasture is still green! Fall is here – lots of our trees are still turning color. Some of the prettier trees are just starting to turn brilliant crimson red while others like in this photo are starting to turn various shades of color.
The problem we were having with the eyelid on the horse is that scar tissue had formed and was forcing the eyelashes to curl downwards, irritating the cornea. Each time it was corrected by the vet it would work for a few weeks then go back to causing irritation.
I’m pretty confident that what the vet did today will solve the problem. He consulted a surgeon and an equine ophthalmologist who both said the scar tissue had to be removed. The scar tissue was removed and a triangular shaped cut made in the eyelid. The eyelashes are now pointing the correct way.
Chief has been such a good boy through all of this, he’s so easy to handle (always has been) and has continued to be a real sweetheart and has kept his good natured personality. This has been ongoing since the end of June. I feel bad that Chief has had to be poked on so much though am very thankful that this injury will now finally get to heal and the eye itself is looking good. Knocking on wood that things weren’t worse!
I’ll get more photos showing the eyelid tomorrow when there is better light.
