The Honest Scrap Award

honestscrap The Honest Scrap AwardCrysta at Go Diego Go was kind enough to bestow the “Honest Scrap” award to my blog!   I’ve been reading Go Diego Go since it was started and can totally relate to what Crysta has gone through in getting a new endurance horse started.  The injuries – oh my!  Ouch.  She recently did a great writeup on “Facing Fear” reviewing what she learned attending the John Lyon’s clinic at the California Horse Expo in June.

When you receive The Honest Scrap Award you must stick to some rules: Recognize your award presenter and link back to their blog in your post. List 10 honest things about yourself that others might not know. Present this award to 10 admirable bloggers and link to their blogs. Leave a comment on your recipients’ blogs to let them know to visit your post to retrieve their award.

Here are 10 honest scraps about me:

  1. I fell in love with endurance riding after going on a horse camping trip and meeting up with a bunch of endurance riders at Robie Park and riding on the Tevis trail.  I remember being totally blown away in awe by their stories and seeing how incredible they all were for continuing to ride after having injuries that would keep most people down for good.  I was hooked!
  2. I had a pony named Patches when I was a child.
  3. I have ridden 1925 miles across the historical Pony Express trail on my horses, and am a member of the Long Rider’s Guild.
  4. One of my first horses was named Bo. My newest horse is named Bo.
  5. I historically have averaged about 2.5 times the miles in training and conditioning as I do in competition.  I ride a lot. With a GPS, so it’s not a guess.
  6. I talk to at least one member of my family out of state at least five times a week.
  7. I’ve ridden 100 miles on an endurance ride with a broken foot.  I’ve ridden another 100 miles with broken ribs.  And I’ve ridden another 100 miler (Tevis, actually) recovering from a ruptured spleen, huge thigh hematoma and head injury with stitches (from a friends horse that kicked me in a trailer).
  8. I rode 9,000 miles in AERC rides before I had my first injury while riding a horse.
  9. I have a current library card and know how to use it.
  10. I was once a CPR instructor, and licensed to drive an ambulance while I was an EMT.

And now for the bloggers to whom I shall pass on this award:

  1. The Soul Of A Horse – This fairly new blog by Joe and Kathleen Camp is about their life with horses.  Joe is the man behind the canine superstar Benji and author of “The Soul Of A Horse”.  Be sure and pick up a copy if you haven’t already.
  2. The Equestrian Vagabond. Stories about Merri’s travels.  She rides, writes and takes photos.
  3. The Barb Wire Tamara writes about horses, endurance riding and other interesting topics.
  4. Barbs Jonna writes about her Barb horses and ranch life in Montana.
  5. Bernie Harbert’s Travel Blog – River Earth.  Bernie has sailed around the world and ridden a horse (or mule) across the United States.  I loved his book “Too Proud to Ride a Cow” and his blog is equally entertaining with great humor!
  6. Teachings of the Horse Victoria is a television and film producer with lots of great wisdom to share when it comes to horses.
  7. If the Trees Had Ears Danielle is a distance rider living on the family farm in Virginia.
  8. Ethical Horsemanship Improving horse welfare through enlightened equitation.
  9. The Duck’s Blog Ummm….it’s not THAT “Duck”, but still….anybody that calls themself a Duck, must be entertaining, right?  Follow the adventures of this Duck as he travels about on a motorcycle.
  10. Dumb Little Man I’ve been reading this for years – lots of great tips on saving money, being more productive and keeping yourself sane.

Wow, I came up with ten pretty quick – I actually had a few more.  I didn’t include any of the blogs that Crysta included in her list, though I do read them all as well.  I have more blogs linked in the right hand column here.  Woohooo, I’m done with this homework project!

  • Hi Karen,

Thanks for naming me up for an Honest Scrap award! I will spend a bit of time to work out who I want to nominate… Have enjoyed looking around your site, and will come back to spend some more time soon.

I have some contacts who Endurance and Competitive Trail ride, so will pass it on to them.

  • Karen – Thanks so much for giving me the Honest Scrap Award! I am amazed by your list of personal physical endurance during all those rides – We should call you Iron Woman! I will try to come up with some new things about myself that I haven’t already revealed in all those blog posts. Sometimes I think that thanks to my blog, my life is an open book.
