I had my vet back out today to take a close look at Chief’s eye. For a couple of reasons – there was one stitch in the corner that was really hard to get at and I didn’t want to risk getting it myself and hurting Chief’s eye.
Chief was such an angel about letting me get all of the other stitches out but this one was located in an area that when you got close enough to snip the stitch it caused an automatic blinking reaction – which occurred even when Chief was tranq’d. There was no way I was going to get it on my own. Even the vet had trouble.
The first two photos show Chief’s eye after the vet left today – in the first one it is open (left eye–click to enlarge), and the second one I got him blinking so you can see how things have gone back together. The third photo is showing the initial injury 16 days ago.
The vet was able to trim away some of the crud and dead stuff under the lid on one end – so Chief would have needed to be tranq’d for that anyway.
I was so VERY relieved when the vet did a thorough eye exam and could not find anything wrong. Everything looks good! He said that Chief came REALLY REALLY close to losing his entire eyelid. I don’t want to know what would have happened if that had happened. I”m sure it wouldn’t have been good.
So now — a couple more days of bute to help with the swelling caused from today’s vet treatment. Everything is healing nicely. It’s going to take awhile for all the swelling to disappear and everything to fully heal, but it sure looks a lot better than even a week ago. Here’s looking at you, Chief!!
