Fort Schellbourne XP ride is coming up and some history of the area

If you are planning on coming and haven’t entered yet, you can enter online by clicking on this link.  Entering ahead helps Annie to plan how much food to purchase plus get a start getting some of the ride awards done. There is plenty of room in camp so anybody who does decide to show up at the last minute can – but please be considerate and submit an entry or at least send

Rocky Boo-boo

Over the years Rocky has always been the horse to get the most boo-boos and wounds. Usually it’s nothing serious and I can doctor it up myself. I don’t know how he did this yesterday but I would imagine he rolled too close to a fence and got his leg caught somehow.

I’m so used to him doing stuff that it doesn’t bother me any more.  Even when there is a lot of blood

Some reasons why I like and don’t like glue on hoof boots

Pro Bono and Granite Chief both wore their Renegade glue-ons for three weeks and three separate endurance events.

The first time I left boots glued on Chief for longer than a couple of weeks was earlier this year and I left them on him for three weeks.  When I took them off I wasn’t really particularly happy with how much hoof growth he had and that his feet hadn’t been able to self-wear.

Hell’s Kitchen Canyon Ride Report & Photos

May 16, 2009 was the 29th consecutive running of the Hell’s Kitchen Canyon endurance ride in Gunnison, Utah.  For the last 13 years Dr. Bruce Burnham has managed the ride.  A total of 27 riders started the 50 with 25 completions.  Two pulls were for lameness.  On the 25 mile LD ride there were 16 starters with one pull for lameness.  Vets were Jon Hunter, who has been vetting the ride for over 20

Back from Utah

It’s hard to believe that I rode 50 miles yesterday in Gunnison, Utah — and now I’m home, almost 600 miles away. I had a really great time and will do a more thorough ride report complete with an album of photos. Hell’s Kitchen Canyon is a really nice ride.  This was the second time I’ve done it and highly recommend it – it’s very well managed and a lot of fun.  I took

On the way home from Utah

Dave Rabe and I are going to stop in Gunnison, Utah and do the Hell’s Kitchen Canyon ride on Saturday.  I’ve done it once before and thought it would work out well to stay here in Mt. Carmel for a few days after the Mt. Carmel XP this year and then head north on our way back home and throw in this one additional 50 mile ride.  I’m going to ride Chief.

Both horses

Year to date XP and Sunrise Ranch Rider and Mileage Results

I’ve gotten a lot of stuff done this week so far….including the year to date mileage totals for all of the riders who have been attending both XP Rides and Sunrise Ranch Rides in 2009.

I’m also keeping track separately of the individual horses and farther into the year after some of the upcoming 5-day rides I’ll post a list of the XP ponies that have completed 500 miles or more on these rides.

Mt. Carmel XP Ride photos

Click here for all three days!

This photo was taken on the first day at the farthest point of the ride, right after our lunch vetcheck.  We had to check our name on the list to show that we were there.

The scenery was stunning!  There is a  lot of variety of scenery and footing on this ride.  Everything from deep sand to rocks and jeep roads and singletrack trails plus lots of colorful
