Mt. Carmel Update

Looks like 70 plus riders tomorrow, day 1 of the Mt. Carmel pioneer ride.  Weather is gorgeous, though probably a little on the hot side considering we have lots of climbing in sand to do.  It’s been great getting to see everybody.  Horses are doing well.

We had a pretty uneventful trip down here – Dave Rabe and I.  No flat tires, no rig problems.  No horse problems.  Stayed overnight in Ely at the fairgrounds and got to watch some roping.  Horses were not bothered and preferred to eat.  My horses also didn’t mind at all when the trash truck came in and emptied a dumpster just a few feet next to them this morning here in camp.  Our endurance horses sure are exposed to a lot of things and learn to take it all in stride!

Chief and Bo both got baths earlier today and then reapplied new (clean) dirt!  ha ha  At least it’s new dirt, right?  I have been pleased with how well they handled the trip and how well they have both been eating and drinking plus peeing and pooping.  Attitude is good.  I keep sneaking carrots out the window to Chief (don’t anybody tell Bo!).  I braided Chief’s mane for tomorrow too.  He is all vetted in and ready to go tomorrow.  Both horses still have their glued on Renegades from the Washoe ride last weekend.

A rider traveling home to Montanna stopped on their way – just a trail rider.  His horse is a TW and is going to be 36 years old in a couple of weeks.  He rode bareback around camp visiting with everybody today.  Amazing horse, looks great for his age — wow!

Internet connection is iffy so I probably won’t post any photos till later.  Today was a busy day that involved trail marking, putting water out, checking riders in, checking and printing maps plus a whole lot of other things.  I helped as much as I could and was only a small keg in the wheel of progress that was made.  So many people have been helping and things are really coming together.

Should be a good ride tomorrow, I’m really looking forward to riding Cheefy.  icon wink Mt. Carmel Update   Got my Cool Medics vest out and will be sure to attach a scoop to the saddle.  I’m going to leave late and take it real easy. Tomorrow is the 50 mile day (day 2 being 55).  I still have the fan on in my trailer at almost 10 p.m., so it’s pretty warm – I sure won’t be in a hurry tomorrow.  I just want Chief to finish in good shape.
