I wanted to try and use a HRM (heart rate monitor) on Chief on this ride. So I got a new battery in my watch and tried setting things up today.
It’s so frustrating. I think I need a new battery in my transmitter.
So, I gave up.
Over the years I have used a HRM a lot. [...]
We had a beautiful day. Now it’s sprinkling rain. It’ll stop soon and clear up again though, as the clouds are sparse. It’s been sprinkling infrequently but today and yesterday just enough to keep the dust down. I love this kind of weather because it keeps things cooled off and also gives lots of great [...]
It was dinner time while the rainbow appeared, so I didn’t get any shots of it until later when it was faded quite a bit – this is the photo that you see here. We had BBQ’d cheeseburgers for dinner and the evening was absolutely perfectly – no wind, warm, and just enough clouds [...]
Weather has been really nice here at Schellbourne – just enough cloud cover but still also sunny and warm. It’s great at night – no need to turn the heater on.
The clouds that we do have are making for a really beautiful sunset. Especially where the sun shines through and lights up sections [...]
The weather is really quite pleasant with just enough cloud cover to keep things cool and comfortable. I snapped a few photos that I thougth I’d share of things around camp today.
I want to go mark some trail up at the pass on Rocky but I”m waiting for instruction on where to go exactly. I [...]
Gravesites at Fort Schellbourne
The previously 3 Unknown men who were murdered, probably around 09 Jun 1865
near Schell Creek Station, are now identified as: Two brothers, Morgan and
Martin Woolman of Buchanan Co., Iowa and a traveling companion known only
as “Jim.”
Morgan and Martin Woolman went west some time in 1864 and were on their way
back from California [...]
For those of you who will be making the drive to Fort Schellbourne in the next several says across Highway 50 (aka the Loneliest Road in America), here is a bit of history on the Pony Express that you can think about while making the drive and passing some of these areas.
Use your imagination and [...]
I can’t stand a mess or clutter, especially in my horse trailer. Those of you that know me at rides know that I am always shaking out my rugs, sweeping up the dirt off of the floor and wiping everything down. There are rides where it’s hopeless but I try to keep it under [...]
After you finish an endurance ride, how soon do you trailer home?
I’ve been thinking about this topic lately given the last trip where I finished a ride then trailered about 80 miles to stay the night in a fairgrounds then drove home another 500 miles the following day.
My horses both did well and were taking [...]
If you are planning on coming and haven’t entered yet, you can enter online by clicking on this link. Entering ahead helps Annie to plan how much food to purchase plus get a start getting some of the ride awards done. There is plenty of room in camp so anybody who does decide to show [...]
Over the years Rocky has always been the horse to get the most boo-boos and wounds. Usually it’s nothing serious and I can doctor it up myself. I don’t know how he did this yesterday but I would imagine he rolled too close to a fence and got his leg caught somehow.
I’m so [...]
I set up a high-line between my two Hi-ties on my trailer today and let Chief give it a test out. it worked great! He really caught on fast and had fun going back and forth on it. I thought this might be a good idea for rides where I only bring one horse or [...]
The first time I left boots glued on Chief for longer than a couple of weeks was earlier this year and I left them on him for three weeks. When I took them off I wasn’t really particularly happy with how much hoof growth he had and that his feet hadn’t been able to self-wear.
I [...]
May 16, 2009 was the 29th consecutive running of the Hell’s Kitchen Canyon endurance ride in Gunnison, Utah. For the last 13 years Dr. Bruce Burnham has managed the ride. A total of 27 riders started the 50 with 25 completions. Two pulls were for lameness. On the 25 mile LD ride there were 16 [...]
