Mounting a horse (a little humor) :)

Patty prepares to mount Shelly at EMS

Mounting a horse is actually very easy if it is done properly. A rider can only mount a horse from one side because a horse only likes to be mounted from one side. The left side is right and the right side is wrong. You’re right to be left and wrong to be right. If you mount from the front, you mount from the right, which

Pre Ride Photos from EMS Endurance Ride

I have a few more albums to put up from the actual ride.  This one just finished uploading and is of photos the week before the ride showing some of us marking the trail on horseback.  It was a lot of fun.

We had to use a GPS in several sections just to know where the trail went because there was so much snow you couldn’t actually see where the trail went.

Chief’s front boots from the last three weeks

Renegade Glue-Ons After Three Weeks and 250 Miles

I took Chief’s front red Renegade glue on boots off this afternoon.  He had them glued on before the Bar H ride almost three weeks ago.  In the meantime he completed three 50 mile rides plus marked trail and I figure we put about 250 miles on them.  I was pleased with how easily the boots came off after I had put baby oil on

Granite Chief’s 8,000 Miles – Day 3 of Eastern Mojave

Karen & Chief – Eastern Mojave. Photo by Steve Bradley

I really enjoy riding my horses and lately have especially cherished every single minute of it. I have loved riding every one of my horses but I especially have enjoyed the special relationship that I have developed with Chief. He is a once in a lifetime horse and I know that no matter how long I live even if it were to be

Eastern Mojave Ride Update

Christoph and Crockett tied for first place holding hands on the first day of the Mojave ride.  Since it was Valentine’s Day we thought it fitting that we put it into a heart and make plaques for them.

I think the riders were quite entertained by the entire thing and Crockett said he’d be sending them all a bill as they needed to pay somebody for the entertainment provided.

The second day of

First day of the Eastern Mojave ride

I had a pretty great ride today on Chief. We finished at 3 p.m. in 19th place out of around 70 riders. The scenery on the trail was absolutely beautiful and stunning. One rider told me that she thought this was the most beautiful ride she had ever done. It was really very special and I was so grateful to be out there on Cheefy today. We had a pretty good time though Chief

Kerry gives Pro Bono a lesson on Friday

Today was the best day ever. Kerry gave Bo a lesson in Nannette’s big jumping arena. It was so much fun to watch and see how well trained my horse is with a really good rider (not me!). This photo is of Kerry and Bo taking a canter lead with Bo trying to rush into it and not really behaving. To back up a bit,

Has your horse ever had an oral ulcer from using a bit?

Bo goes really well in his Myler combo bit

I got this (below) from PubMed the other day and thought it was interesting.  So of course I had to go look up a diagram of a horses mouth to see which teeth they were talking about so I could go annoy my own horses with checking for oral ulcers after riding them with bits.  Turns out it’s the teeth behind (above) where the

Eastern Mojave Pioneer Ride 2009

Dave riding Rushcreek Okay to mark trail around the Cima Dome

The trail is completely marked.  Today I trailered out with Dave Rabe and we marked a couple of different sections including around the Cima dome.  The weather has been clearing up and it was a pretty nice day.  The snow is melting but even where it was on the trail the footing was perfect for the horses.  Things dry out so quickly
