Rocky’s recovery from laminitis

Here are a couple of photos of Rocky’s hooves.  I took these this morning.  We are keeping him trimmed frequently (current toe length:  3 inches).  All of the stress rings from the laminitic episodes have grown out.  He still has a small area on the bottom of the white foot where an abscess had come out, but overall is doing pretty darn well all things considered.  I’m also going to post a video

The only time Chief gets to see living room furniture

Chief and I had a nice long ride today.  The weather has continued to be quite pleasant, though it felt cooler with the cloud cover.  It is perfect weather to ride in with horses that have winter coats – Chief definitely was feeling good and we had a lot of fun burning off all of that energy in a positive way.  Being that today was a holiday also, we encountered a few other trail

Trying to determine if/when I can toss Bo’s splint and ankle boots??

I am not a fan of using more than you need tack wise on a horse.  With a young or inexperienced horse it’s a different story, as they can be clumsy especially when you take them through rough country for the first few times.  Over the years I have seldom used protective boots on the horses legs.  I do use one hind ankle boot on Chief often, and am forever being told “do you

My fat white (insulin resistant) endurance horse

Rocky tacked up with his Freeform Saddle & Red Renegades!

I’m going to start riding Rocky again more regularly now that his feet have grown out and he’s sound again.  How wonderful is that?  He had a slight episode of laminitis last year.  His feet fully recovered.  He’s considered to be insulin resistant so I had to make a few changes with how I manage his feeding program.  No big changes because luckily

Do you know what your horse’s hoof angles are?

Granite Chief's front hooves

Chief in his orange Renegades

Below is an excerpt from “The Proper Hoof Angle”, by Henry Heymering, RIF, CIF.  To read the entire article (it’s really good), click here.  Chief’s hoof angles are usually 54 to 56 degrees on his fronts.  I am always checking out hooves and shoeing jobs at rides.  Endurance horses are among the best kept horses in regards to their health and

Free endurance ride photos you can use as desktop backgrounds

Bryce Canyon XP

I usually change my desktop background after each ride.  I will go through my photos and pick one that I like the best.  I just recently found a really cool desktop background software that is free that lets you really customize your backgrounds and how they are displayed.  It’ll change them at regular intervals for you too.

Click here to go to “John’s Background Switcher” where you can download the

Okay, so where is your (equestrian) helmet?

I rode with a couple of people today who don’t use helmets when they horseback ride.  I am so used to using one that I feel strange without it.  I have done a lot of riding without a helmet, but now that I’ve used one for so long and seen so many horse and rider wrecks I don’t want to be without it.

Recently, stories like this one have been in the news.  It’s

My Death Valley Encounter, Day 4 Happy New Year!

Panamint Valley.  Happy New Year December 31, 2008 by Karen Chaton

I had made three days so far and was so determined to make it to at least start the 4th day that a herd of wild horses couldn’t have stopped me. I was looking forward to riding Bo so much on the 4th day that I dreamed about it. I woke up with a feeling of excitement and breathlessness, as if I knew

Zenos and blog updates

I rode Zenos today with my neighbor and her QH.  We had an absolutely beautiful ride.  I think “Z” is the only Arabian I know that is calmer and more laid back than an older (also laid back) QH. He is doing well in his new home as an occasional trail horse and pretty pasture ornament. I really do need to ride Chief and Bo but there’ll be plenty of time for that later
