California Endurance Riding Videos on YouTube

There are more and more videos on YouTube that relate to endurance riding – horses in training and videos from actual rides. Some of them are better than others. It’s another nice way to check out the trails at a ride you are thinking of attending. Or just want to remember a ride. Here are some videos from rides in California.

Watering horses in the winter

Ice water anyone?

Watering horses this time of the year in a cold climate can be a challenge. Recently, Merri at The Equestrian Vagabond posted about getting water heaters installed in the water troughs in Idaho.  She waited too long and had to do it after things froze!

I use the plug type water heaters for my troughs (like this one).  I have two troughs that are heated, and one that isn’t

Useful tip for transitioning from shod to barefoot

Or, just for toughening up your horses already bare hooves.

Here is a description of what Durasole is: Durasole acts as a fixative on the exfoliating sole and insensitive frog on the solar surface of the equine hoof. It disables the intrinsic enzymes which would weaken mechanical composition of these structures, protects the structures from extrinsic damage from microorganisms in their environment, and alters the tissue of the exfoliating sole and insensitive frog at

Blog and online shopping savings :)

I have done a bit of rearranging on the blog today.  I removed the current visitors Feedjit -mainly because it wasn’t that accurate (WordPress gives me way better stats-for example, my blog has already had 21,868 visitors for the month of December!) and I think it slowed loading times down.  I also added a few feeds in the right hand column which shows a few of the most recent posts from each of those

Endurance Horse Electrolyte Research

Endurance riding can lead to significant losses of water and electrolytes, which can cause clinical illnesses related to increased neuromuscular excitability, including cardiac arrhythmia, muscle cramping and twitching, and gut motility changes. When plasma potassium (K+) increases–as it does with increasing exercise intensity–there is a concomitant increase in neuromuscular excitability. Yet, many endurance riders believe that oral potassium supplementation before and during competition is critical to the good health of their horses.   Click here

New Internet Explorer Security Advisory

If you use MIE (Microsoft Internet Explorer) be sure to read this!

Microsoft confirms that all versions of IE have critical new bug

or click here to go directly to the Microsoft advisory page.

I use Firefox mainly which is free and doesn’t usually have the security vulnerabilities that MIE does.  Click here to go to the Firefox download page.  I’ve heard that the Google browser Chrome is also good, but haven’t tried it

Why it is important to hobble train your horse

Weaver hobbled

I’ve lost count the number of times my horses have not been injured because they had been previously hobble broke.  I was really lucky at Bryce in ’07 that when Tigger put his hind leg over his cotton rope that he didn’t struggle and fight and create a much more serious injury.  Usually a rope burn caused by a cotton rope is a fairly minor injury.  Yet, if the horse panics

There are three puppies left out of the original six.  Two girls and a boy – Amaya, Ayumi and Aki.  The other three went to their new forever homes last weekend.  They are now 9 weeks old.  Not much time left but if you want to watch some totally cute pups, check out this link:http://cdn1.ustream.tv/swf/4/viewer.45.swf?cid=317016

It’s kind of fun to check in on the little guys and see how they are growing and
