If your horse happens to get loose if you are traveling or camping (or at an endurance ride), these are a great way to provide identification – especially if your horses manages to slip out of his/her halter.
I braid these metal ID tags into the horses manes when I travel with the horses or when attending rides or other events. I also have these ID tags on other items such as on each saddle, halters and bridles, my crewbag, horse blankets – basically anything that I’d like to get returned in case it gets borrowed or misplaced.
Over the years I’ve used a lot of different kinds, plastic, brass, metal. These are the best I have found so far. They are strong and durable, and over time the engraving doesn’t disappear. I got these from Pet Tags Online, $3.49 each.
I often will get a few nametags with each horses name on them. Then I will get a few extras that say “I belong to” with my name, address and cell phone number. That way they can be used more universally. When I went on the long 2001 XP endurance ride I got permission ahead of time to put the veterinarian’s phone number on the ID tags as well. Due to the remoteness of some of that trail I wanted to ensure that my horses would be found or receive the help they might need if it ever came to that.
